About Us
The Networking Services unit supports and maintains a state-of-the-art network infrastructure capable of supporting integrated voice, video, and data applications and provides network resources to our user community. The HSC network provides Gigabit Ethernet service in the core and to servers, 10MB/100MB Ethernet to workstation, 802.11b wireless access in our student network, and firewall technology supporting a multi-layer security model meeting the security needs of our academic health care center. A central server environment supporting file/print/application sharing, SAN (storage area network) availability, and collaborative groupware software for e-mail, calendar, document sharing is provided to Health Sciences Center students, faculty, staff, and administration.
Important Information
In order to maximize network uptime and prevent network-related problems, any device in violation of the following guidelines will be removed from the network.
Cause for Network / Internet access termination:
- Machine infected with a virus or trojan
- Implementing any network services or NLMs that interfere with normal operations
- Unauthorized access or modification of User Files
- Any attempt to gain access or to use an account other than by the owner is considered a severe violation of network policy
- Such attempts include, but are not limited to
- Gaining access to a user's account while the user is away from a terminal or a workstation
- Making efforts to determine another user's password by closely watching a login
- Developing applications which request or capture user passwords

Please note the following:
- Any activity that causes degradation of network computing resources will be monitored and is prohibited. These activities include:
- Excessive game playing
- Electronic chatting
- Reproduction and distribution of the class of programs known as viruses, worms, and Trojan horses
- Attempts to circumvent network and data protection schemes and devices
- Junk mail or "Spam" mail

Sending chain letters is a waste of Internet bandwidth and is flatly prohibited. Anyone who transmits a chain letter to the Internet from a WVU domain account will have their account privileges suspended pending further investigation.

GroupWise Instant Messenger Policy
GroupWise Instant Messenger is provided to WVU Health Sciences Center users as a productivity tool for Instant Messaging communications. WVU Health Sciences Center does not routinely monitor Instant Messaging conversations or transmissions. However, the University and the Health Sciences Center reserves the right to access, review and release all electronic information that is transmitted over or stored in University systems or facilities, whether or not such information is private in nature, and therefore complete confidentiality or privacy of Instant Messaging cannot be guaranteed.

The Office of Information Technology has released updated policy and guidelines regarding file sharing.
It is against University policy for users to use University equipment or services to access, use, copy or otherwise reproduce, or make available to others any copyright-protected materials or software except as permitted under copyright law or specific license. Specifically, users are prohibited from:
- Copying or reproducing any licensed software on University computing equipment, except as expressly permitted by the software license. Also, users may not use unauthorized copies of software on University-owned computers or on personal computers housed in University facilities.
- Copying, downloading, or uploading audio recordings, music, movies, videos and other kinds of copyright-protected files electronically without the owner's permission.
- Posting copyrighted material on a WVU owned web site (official or personal).
In the interest of making the use of IT resources a natural part of the day-to-day learning and work of all members of the University community, incidental personal use is tolerated. However, one should not use University sources of email, Internet access, and other IT services for activities of an extensive nature that are unrelated to University purposes. Excessive use of systems for recreational Internet browsing, email, or game playing is to be avoided and may subject University employees to disciplinary action up to and including termination.
