Mission:  WVU Health Sciences Center Information Systems Operations provides networking and telecommunication services, user training, consultation, public computing facilities, and Help Desk support to Health Sciences Center students, faculty, and staff in support of the teaching, learning, and research mission of the Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center.

Goal:  Provide state-of-the-art network infrastructure capable of supporting integrated voice, video, and data applications and provide technology resources to our user community supporting the academic and clinical environments.

Information Systems Operations (ISO) is comprised of four units – Network Services, Telecommunications, Customer Service Center (Help Desk), and the Computer-Based Learning Center (CBLC).

Network Services:The Network Services unit supports and maintains a state-of-the-art network infrastructure capable of supporting integrated voice, video, and data applications and provides network resources to our user community.  The HSC network provides Gigabit Ethernet service in the core and to servers, 10MB/100MB Ethernet to workstations, 802.11g wireless access in our student network, and firewall technology supporting a multi-layer security model meeting the security needs of our academic health care center.  A central server environment supporting file/print/application sharing, anti-virus, anti-spam, SAN (storage area network) availability, and collaborative groupware software for e-mail, calendar, document sharing is provided to Health Sciences Center students, faculty, staff, and administration.  Internet and Internet2 service is provided through the WVU main campus network.  Two redundant Gigabit Ethernet links interconnect the HSC to the main campus.  Our Network Services group provides network support to our Charleston and Martinsburg campuses.  Connectivity to our remote campuses is provided through the WV SUN (WV State Unified Network) operated by WVNET (WV Network for Educational Telecommuting).

Telecommunications:  This unit coordinates and provides all telecommunication services for theHealth Sciences Center.  In 2004, the Health Sciences Center implemented a Voice Over IP (VoIP) system using Cisco technology.  This system was jointly installed by Health Sciences Center and the main campus IT groups.  The system provides greater flexibility in managing our phone environment over the previous ISDN system managed by Verizon and has proven to be more cost effective.  All telephone service requests are managed in-house providing more efficient, faster service for our customers and cost savings since we no longer contract externally for phone repairs/adds/moves/changes.

Customer Service Center (Help Desk):The Customer Service Center provides technical system support to Health Sciences Center students, faculty, and staff at all three Health Sciences Center campuses and local offsite facilities.  This unit diagnoses and resolves problems with computing systems, network and telecommunications connectivity, and supports the Health Sciences Center mandatory student computer program.  Annually, our technicians respond to an average of 8,900 calls for students, faculty, staff, and administration.

HSC Mandatory Student Laptop Program:  In 1998, West Virginia University Health Sciences Center established the HSC Student Computer Program to assist students in furthering their education through use of powerful computing resources. Students entering the School of Medicine are issued a Lenovo ThinkPad notebook computer for use as an integral part of the curriculum. The computer program provides a portal for online education, access to our Library's electronic collection, a software package that includes electronic versions of medical resource materials, wireless network access within the Health Sciences Center, off-site access, on-campus printers and supplies, warranty and insurance coverage, and onsite Lenovo certified technical support/maintenance for hardware/software problems through the Customer Service Center. Our program goal is to provide our students with computer literacy skills to assist the student with learning, test taking, patient care, research, managed care, and hospital record keeping.

Our Customer Service Center provides classroom support to faculty/students for laptop use within the classrooms and provides all maintenance repairs as part of the Lenovo Self-Maintainer Program.  In 2007, our service team was recognized for outstanding performance as a Lenovo Self-Maintainer site and for being in the top 15% of Self-Maintainer sites for properly diagnosing/resolving computer problems, efficiently using parts and fixing machines thoroughly the first time.

The Learning Center:
Information Systems Operations staff provide a modern education-based computing center designed to give students a professional place to learn and study.  Our software consultants assist students, faculty, and staff on the use of computers and technology for teaching, learning, and research.

Workshops are offered on a variety of software ranging from productivity, library resources, web technologies, digital devices, graphic arts, and specialty programs.  For more information on workshops offered through the Learning Center, please visit http://cblc.hsc.wvu.edu.

HSC faculty use the facility for computer-based instruction and testing.  The facility contains (2) 25 seat computing classrooms that can be combined into one 50 seat classroom if desired and 63 public access workstations.  Wireless Internet is available throughout the facilities and other student areas located within the Health Sciences Center.
